10 Most Terrifying Horror Movies Released In 2023 So Far
3. Evil Dead Rise
There are only three things in this world that are certain; death, taxes, and modern reboots of classic horror franchises. The first two are never wanted, but the latter is sometimes a welcomed sight. Thankfully, this 2023 re-exploration of the Evil Dead franchise did it right, bringing passion, blood, and (most importantly) terror back into the property.
Evil Dead Rise walks away from the traditional cabin-in-the-woods style of the series and instead shows a Deadite invasion of an inner-city apartment complex. It follows a mother named Ellie, who is possessed by an evil spirit and begins an onslaught on her family.
This movie is a no-holds-barred scare-fest, delving deep into the depravity of the Deadites and the twisted imagination of the filmmakers. It's packed from wall to wall with some of the most visceral violence you will ever see, featuring kids eating glass, cheese graters tearing up legs, and more.
While the gore is frightening, the film also boasts a haunting performance from Alyssa Sutherland as Ellie. She manages to play this possessed character with fearsome malice and an uncanny creepiness that makes every second she's on screen a nightmare.
It's a brilliant horror flick, but one you'll want an empty stomach for.
