Skinamarink is about as far from a traditional horror movie as you're going to get, but that is the strength of this experimental film. The project premiered for festivals in 2022 but didn't get a widespread release until 2023, where it garnered acclaim from critics but some reservations from audiences. It's no surprise, as it doesn't play by the rules.

The film follows the events after two children awake during the night to find that their home has changed. Their father is missing, and the windows/doors have vanished, leaving them stranded inside the house.

Part of what makes this film truly terrifying is how well it captures the feeling of childhood terror. When you're a toddler, you can barely make sense of the world, so the nighttime can be a nightmarish place. The film encapsulates that anxiety and confusion, as you feel as helpless and vulnerable as the kids.

While most horrors, especially big theatrical releases, attempt to keep you engaged throughout with consistent action and energy, this film does the opposite. It's a real slog to get through at times, thanks to extensive periods of inactivity. But this works into the scares as the slow intro makes the eventual delve into horror all the more unsettling.
