10 Most Underrated 1990s Sci-Fi Movies

6. Dark City

Eraser movie
New Line Cinema

Perhaps one of the most strangely underappreciated films of all time, Dark City actually received positive reviews from critics when it was released in 1998, but it struggled at the box office (partially due to coming out in the midst of Titanic's record-breaking dominance) and has essentially been all-but-forgotten to history.

A film that is set in a world without any sun, the protagonist (Rufus Sewell) is suffering from amnesia just as he's framed for murdering someone and he is subsequently hunted by these bizarre looking creatures known only as The Strangers.

It's an ambitiously stylistic piece that thrives on both its aesthetically-pleasing (more like unnerving) sights and thought-provoking questions (who can you trust when you have no memories?). It's also considered one of the major influences behind The Matrix, so it's really unfortunate that the neo-noir sci fi just isn't as well-remembered.
