5. Split Decision - The Dark Knight

Two Face And Son

This scene from The Dark Knight doesn't get the credit it deserves, but given that this movie is so incredible from start to finish, it's easy to understand why. Two Face is physically and psychologically ripped apart by the death of Rachel, and wants to avenge her against the three men most responsible for it: Batman, Jim Gordon, and... yes, Harvey Dent. As Two Face holds Jim Gordon's son hostage, he faces off against Batman in not a battle of wills, strength, or intelligence, but of justice. As Two Face points out: "The world is cruel, and the only morality in a cruel world is chance. Unbiased. Unprejudiced. Fair." As the former White Knight's psyche seems ready to crumble, he decides to flip a coin to decide everyone's fates, including his own. Cue the lucky two headed quarter, scarred on one side just like its owner, and what is arguably the tensest coin flip in cinema history (No Country For Old Men could make a case). Batman saves Gordon's son, but knocks Two Face and himself off the roof of the building. Two Face is killed. Add to this the fact that this scene leads directly into the plot of The Dark Knight Rises with the Dent Act, it it makes it even better than it already is.
