Even those who didn't actively seek out western yarn Jane Got A Gun are probably aware of its nightmarish production, in which the film's original director - Lynne Ramsay - left due to creative differences and was ultimately replaced by Gavin O'Connor (best known for the mixed martial arts flick Warrior).

The plot here hones in on the Jane of the title, played by Natalie Portman, who sets out to seek revenge on the man who killed her husband (played by a scenery-chewing Ewan McGregor). Most critics slammed the film for being dull, slow and conventional, but many seemed to missed the solid message and admirable craftsmanship driving this traditional tale of a woman fighting for her life.

That isn't to say this is Once Upon a Time In The West; there are moments where it feels like Jane Got a Gun is refusing to think outside of the box. Regardless of that, though, it's visually stunning, Portman makes for a believable badass, and the picture conveys a memorable sense of post-Civil War desolation with a simple, classic plot. Basically, if you like westerns, you're going to appreciate this.

Jane Got A Gun was a huge box office flop, pulling in just $3 million on a budget of $25 million - a fact which hasn't helped it reputation. Still, for a film that received such harsh critical notices, this is actually a perfectly enjoyable feminist western packed with allusions to genre favourites like The Searchers and The Magnificent Seven.
