10 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Action Movies

1. Dark City

In what proved to be a case of a movie being slightly ahead of its time, Dark City was the tale of a futuristic world in which the truth of existence was hidden from the human inhabitants by mysterious captors wearing trenchcoats. Sound familiar? The script was very much in the style and substance of The Matrix, but if anything, was a little better. In spite of this, this Alex Proyas directed film bizarrely bombed at the box office.

The film begins with a man, John Murdoch, awakening in a bathtub with no idea who or where he is. Murdoch soon finds out that he has a wife and is also accused of murder, while also realising that he has abilities in telekinesis. The mysterious alien creatures known as 'The Strangers' who roam the streets also have these telekinesis powers, and have Murdoch on the top of their most wanted list.

The cinematography is outstanding here, the bleak but ever changing landscape brought to life in spite of a meagre budget. The acting is all first rate, Rufus Sewell outstanding as Murdoch, with Kiefer Sutherland revelling in the role of cooky scientist Dr Schreber, who knows more than he lets on.

The final fight sequence is gripping stuff, while there are some stunning reveals, most notably exactly where they are and the purpose of the Strangers mission. The film deserves to be hailed as one of the all time great Sci-Fi films, rather than a largely forgotten entity from the last century.
