3. Black Sea
A 2014 movie that sees its hero's semi-noble aims waylaid by gold, but instead of allowing the actor to show the descent into madness, other characters simply talk about his development. No, this isn't The Hobbit (although the treatment of Thorin was equally egregious), but Black Sea, the Jude Law-starring, Kevin MacDonald-directed submarine drama. Black Sea sees the man behind Into The Void and The Last King Of Scotland go into moral-heavy B-movie territory, putting a bunch of money-hungry men in an enclosed space and letting the sparks ignite. Jude Law's Captain Robinson is the one with the major metaphorical journey, bringing the team together not just out of hunger for money, but also the love for his broken family. The calm head amongst the mad, his arc should be obvious from the off - at some point he'll lose focus on what his goals are and end up putting the crew in more danger. Which he eventually does, only it comes out of nowhere, with the supporting cast filling in for the audience what should have been an awards moment for Law. One minute Robinson's trying to keep things together, the next he's barking deadly orders and Smauging over the MacGuffin. When the whole film hinges on this development, to rush it is a pretty damning mistake to miss the bridging change.
