Steven Spielberg has helmed no shortage of war films during his long career and several of them have seen him work in tandem acclaimed Polish cinematographer Janusz Kamiński, with the 60-year-old having earned five Academy Award nominations for his work with the Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark legend.

Among them was an Oscar-winning turn for Holocaust drama Schindler's List with its memorable black-and-white palate, with another nod for War Horse - but we've gone for the pair's second Dolby Theatre-conquering collaboration, the masterful WWII epic Saving Private Ryan.

Rarely has a film captured the grit of warfare, from its bravura opening sequence on Omaha Beach through to its valiant final stand. Throughout it all, Kamiński - shooting in a desaturated palate that truly hammers home the agonies of the Invasion of Normandy - captures moments of sheer poetic beauty out of the chaos and bloodshed, images that stick in the gut long after the credits roll. It's a visceral masterpiece.
