10 Movie Actors Who Were Discovered In Unusual Ways

1. Charlie Hunnam Was Discovered On A Drunken Christmas Shop In Newcastle

Though Charlie Hunnam's box-office numbers are nothing to shout home about, he has starred in some awesome movies over the last decade-and-a-bit, whether it's Children Of Men, Pacific Rim, or Crimson Peak.

But way before all that, his acting career kicked off on TV, with a small role in the popular British drama series Byker Grove putting his name on the map - and the story of how he got there is pretty bonkers, to say the least.

As a teenager, Hunnam developed a supposedly "foolproof strategy" to get his Christmas shopping done: he would go to the pub on Christmas Eve, get a little tipsy, then head to the shops at 4pm, giving him a single hour to buy everything he needed.

While he was on one of these drunken, last-minute shopping sprees, he put on some trainers in JD Sports and had a little dance around. A woman stared at him - presumably with a bemused expression on her face - but rather than feeling embarrassed, Hunnam decided to blow her a kiss and give her a cheeky wink.

As luck would have it, it turned out that this woman was the production manager of Byker Grove. She approached Hunnam, invited him for an audition, and he ultimately won the role, kick-starting his acting career in a truly unlikely fashion.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
