4. Jesus Christ - The Last Temptation Of Christ

It's almost funny how easy it is to whip up a fervor of anger and hatred in right-wing Christians. All one needs to do is suggest that their favourite book (next to The Art of the Deal, of course) may not be entirely historically accurate, and your work will be burned, banned, protested and censored.

The Last Temptation of Christ was, to hear devout Christians tell it, the worst thing to happen to Jesus since The Life of Brian. It was an unapologetic portrayal of their saviour and his time on earth, directed by one of the most sincere Catholics in filmmaking, Martin Scorcese. But the film dares to suggest that Christ had his doubts about his destiny, had relations with Mary Magdelene and even showed Judas as a conflicted figure (and Pontious Pilate as an uncaring, shallow David Bowie, casually washing his hands). If anything, its theoretical value suggests the man behind the work gave great consideration to the life and times of Jesus Christ.

That didn't stop the riots that occurred outside and inside theatres, one culminating in a firebomb in France - you know, something Christ would do.
