10 Movie Characters Who Broke Their Own Rules
5. Ash - Alien
Rules and protocols are always put in place for a reason, whether it is for safety, personal gain, or a plethora of other potential reasons. On board a spacecraft, it is very much the former, with any break having potentially deadly consequences.
Of course, this was no different with the Nostromo. In Ridley Scott's iconic Alien, the bulk of the crew left the ship to explore, and tried to bring Kane (John Hurt) back on board after contact with an unknown alien entity. As the highest-ranking officer left on the ship, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) fought to keep the door shut to them.
Allowing Kane back on the Nostromo with the alien still attached to his face was strictly against the science division's basic quarantine law. Kane should not have been let on board before a 24-hour decontamination period, something that could have killed him, yes, but if not observed would have, and ultimately did, jeopardise everyone else as well.
Though Ripley stood firm, it was Ash (Ian Holm) who broke the law in this instance as he let Kane and the Xenomorph through the doors, which led to the deaths of everyone but Ripley. It was Kane's secret directive to specifically ensure the alien sample was brought back aboard the Nostromo, so he was technically following one rule while breaking another.
