10 Movie Details That Aren’t As Important As You Think

6. The Blue Box - Mulholland Drive

Spider-Man 3 Gwen Stacy Bryce Dallas Howard
Universal Pictures

Mulholland Drive is directed by David Lynch so, of course, not a lot of it makes sense.

A tangled web of stories across various versions of Los Angeles, the film revolves around Naomi Watt's character, Betty, and her quest to help a woman with amnesia. However, as the story goes on, it is Betty who ends up doubting who she is.

Betty believes that a woman named Diane is central to the mystery, but she struggles to find her. She then turns her attention to a blue box that matches a key found on the woman after the car crash. After opening the box, Betty wakes up to find that she is Diane.

Or is she?

The blue box is meant to hold the answers for both Betty and the audience, but all is does is create more questions. And that's the point.

The idea at the heart of Mulholland Drive is that reality is fragile and untrustworthy.

The box could be a portal to another world, it could be some sort of demon, or it could just be nothing. Ultimately, it's just a tool to show how thin the walls between reality and dreams are and how easily they can be broken down.
