10 Movie Endings That Were Profoundly Insulting

1. The Open House

If you haven't seen the Netflix Original horror film The Open House, firstly well done, and secondly, don't.

The premise is familiar enough - a mother and son (Piercey Dalton and Dylan Minnette) move into her sister's for-sale house and are almost immediately assailed by a seemingly supernatural presence - but with an atmospheric execution, it certainly could've been an entertaining straight-to-streaming romp.

As it turns out, the family is actually being tormented by a serial killer, who at the end of the movie tricks the son into accidentally stabbing his mother to death, and then strangles the son out in the forest.

The final scene of the film sees the killer leave the crime scene and head to another open house to repeat his terror. Yup. That's it.

Given that the film built up a mystery - albeit not a particularly compelling one - revolving around the reveal of the presence in their home, the fact that it turns out to be an anonymous Bad Guy whose identity is never revealed nor whose motives are ever explained is intensely unsatisfying.

There's no cool nihilism here, just lazy writing and 94 minutes of you time wasted. It's horrifying, for sure, just not in the way the filmmakers intended.
