10 Movie Franchises Hollywood Will Never Let Die
5. J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World
The Harry Potter franchise may have ended in 2011 after eight movies and $7.7bn in box office takings, but the series seems to have lost none of its appeal and has long since transcended its status as a cultural phenomenal to become one of the most iconic works of fiction ever created.
Faced with a multi-billion dollar shortfall in profits, Warner Bros. decided to capitalize on the continued popularity of the brand and expand Rowling's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them into a five-movie blockbuster franchise of its own. It turned out to be a shrewd decision as the first movie earned an impressive $814m worldwide, once again demonstrating the wide reach of the wizarding world.
So what happens when Fantastic Beasts reaches a conclusion? Is the studio finally going to bow out of the Potter game after a total of thirteen movies across two decades? Not a chance. The sheer amount of revenue that the franchise generates will see Warner Bros. attempt to wring every last penny out of the extended mythology.
At this point it seems increasingly likely that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will receive the big-screen treatment at some point. Is the well going to run dry after feature-length versions of Quidditch Through The Ages and The Tales of Beedle the Bard are inevitably made? Of course not, they'll probably just reboot the whole thing and adapt the books again.
