Just because a franchise doesn't end the way the creator intended, doesn't mean that it can't end on a high note. Case in point:

The beloved horror comedy series, Evil Dead.

Beginning with the amateurish but nonetheless impressive original, followed by the stone cold horror classic sequel, then ending with the hilarious Army Of Darkness, this series has maintained its intense cult following despite no signs or plans for a 4th entry.

True, much of that has to do with the fact that between comics, the occasional video game and the fantastic Ash Vs. Evil Dead television series, the fanbase is never truly left hanging. But a lot of it has to do with there just not being anything else quite like it. The closest anything had ever come was Joss Whedon's Cabin In The Woods, which just didn't have the same staying power.

Again, despite the fact that Army Of Darkness was not where Sam Raimi intended to end the franchise, both the theatrical and director's cut endings are perfect ways for this series to go out in theatres.

At once grounded and horrific, yet utterly hilarious, it's unlikely anything else like Evil Dead will happen for a long time.
