The Franchise: This summer's The Dark Tower was conceived as the first entry into a cinematic franchise based on Stephen King's beloved cult novel series, which would not only lead to more movies but a spin-off TV series also starring Idris Elba and Tom Taylor as Roland Deschain and Jake Chambers.

It's a modestly-budgeted $60 million adventure movie with an A-list cast based on a popular novel series from a legendary author. How could they screw this up?

What Happened?: Though not an outright dud, the movie only grossed $111.8 million worldwide, which combined with some of the year's worst reviews has pretty much guaranteed that Elba and Matthew McConaughey will want to distance themselves from this as quickly as possible.

The planned sequel isn't happening and word has gone quiet on the TV show. Though the franchise could be rebooted in the future, perhaps as a Netflix series, this iteration is done.
