10 Movie Franchises That Died In 2017
4. Diary Of A Wimpy Kid
The Franchise: The original three Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies released from 2010-2012, based on Jeff Kinney's popular book series, consistently grossed upwards of $70 million worldwide against sensible small budgets of $15-20 million, and to be honest, they were relatively amusing, harmless kids movies.
However, by 2012, the central child actors had grown too old to convincingly play their respective characters anymore, so earlier this year, a reboot was released, complete with a totally new cast.
What Happened?: Though Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul was again budgeted at around $20 million, it ended up grossing just $40 million, which combined with harshly negative reviews (especially for the new casting) made it clear that the reboot wasn't going to take with audiences.
If a fifth film was indeed going to happen, it would've already been in production by now given the aforementioned ageing issue. The franchise is toast.
