10 Movie Franchises That Will Be Remembered For The Wrong Reasons
3. As The Franchise That Didn't Understand Why It Was Funny In The First Place - Dumb & Dumber
The original Dumb and Dumber was seemingly the result of a happy accident: given the premise, it could have ended up as one of the worst comedy movies ever, and yet... magic. It's not the greatest comedy of all-time, of course, but it works for two reasons: the chemistry between the leads, played by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniel, and because - for all its grotesque moments - it actually has a heck of a lot of heart. Go figure. So imagine the surprise amongst established fans, who presumably sat down to Dumb and Dumber To - this year's belated sequel - to discover that the Farrelly Brothers had completely forgotten why people loved the original. Mean-spirited in a way that only the writer of Horrible Bosses could ensure (indeed; he co-wrote the script), this casts a dark shadow over the legacy. It shouldn't tarnish the original, but it does.
