Why Is He An Idiot? Forrest Gump is the mentally slow, social inept central character in almost every major historic event of the last half-dozen decades. Somehow stumbling through the rise of Elvis, the Vietnam war, the Watergate scandal, the sudden growth of Apple and many other historic events, all Forrest really wants is to get Jenny, the girl of his dreams. Gump is one of the greatest roles Tom Hanks has portrayed, if not the greatest, simply because Forrest is the most delightful dimwit there is. He is full of simple, loving advice from his mother and at his heart, all he wants is love. But all this means that he has no real idea what he is actually doing (He meets several Presidents with awkward casualness)
Top Idiotic Moment After being wounded in Vietnam, Gump finds himself receiving a Medal of Honor from President Lyndon. B Johnson. After revealing plainly that he was "shot in the but-tocks", Lyndon jokes that he'd like to see that, only for the obliviously innocent Gump to drop his pants and inadvertently moon the President, in front of national TV cameras and, more importantly, his shocked mother. Hey, at least he got all the ice cream he could eat beforehand, right?
How He Saved the Day Gump may be more unintelligent that actual stupid, but it is the feats he accomplishes that places him so high on this list. For every event listed above, Gump, completely unconsciously, affects them in some way. Elvis learns his signature dance routine from the young Gump, who goes on to save the lives of many soldiers in 'Nam, help expose Watergate and gain many profitable shares in Apple, not to mention his legendary run across America. Not only is Gump a hero to the whole of the USA, he finally gets Jenny, albeit for a very short time. Some heroes never get the reward they deserve, and Forrest deserves so much more than he gets. A somber entry for a list like this, but an important one for an important film and a very important idiot.
