Die hard Superman fans will claim that their beloved hero would never kill anybody - he'd find a way to avoid such means, no matter how difficult the situation was. And yet in Zack Snyder's latest Superman reboot, Clark Kent is forced - during the movie's brutal, CGI-heavy climax - to snap the neck of the malevolent General Zod in order to save a family. The fanboys left Man of Steel in a state close to that of disbelief: did Superman really just murder somebody outright? Of course, Snyder (and his screenwriter David S. Goyer) don't owe allegiance to any pre-existing interpretation of Superman: wasn't the point of Man of Steel to reboot the franchise, and bring a new dimension to the character? Now we have an arguably more interesting Superman character - one who has the burden of a killing on his shoulders. Added dramatic weight, surely? And yet the fanboys ranted and raved in their masses: you can't tell these guys anything!
