10 Movie Post-Credits Scenes That Lied

Though post-credits scenes were undeniably popularised by the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent years, they've existed for literally decades as a means to give audiences one final gag or scare, or to indeed promote an upcoming potential sequel.

But the nature of Hollywood being what it is, it's safe to say that even the best laid plans don't always go ahead, and sometimes a post-credits scene's integrity ends up being invalidated by what happens - or doesn't happen - in a future film.

These 10 post-credits scenes, then, whether teasing returning characters, upcoming movies, enticing storylines, or even the end of the franchise, were all betrayed by sequels, spin-offs, and even the word of the filmmakers themselves.

For the most part these movies managed to get away with it, however, either because a lot of viewers never even saw the post-credits scene to begin with, or the lie was replaced by something of equal or significant value to fans.

Whatever the outcome, though, there's no denying that these post-credits scenes told audiences one thing, only for subsequent events to tell them something else entirely...

Fast Five may be one of the strongest entries into the franchise, but it also commits arguably one of its greatest sins, by implying the return of a legacy character which ultimately never came to pass.

Its mid-credits scene sees Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) being handed a dossier by Monica Fuentes (Eva Mendes), who previously appeared as the female lead way back in 2 Fast 2 Furious.

Beyond the dossier revealing that Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) was still alive, the scene seemed to suggest that Fuentes was making a return to the franchise, and would be back for future sequels in some capacity.

But lo and behold, four mainline movies have released in the decade-plus since this scene dropped and Eva Mendes' spunky federal agent has yet to resurface.

Ultimately Mendes chose to retire from acting a few years after Fast Five's release to raise her family, though Vin Diesel has hinted more recently that she could end up finally returning in the series' upcoming two-part finale.

As it stands, though, this post-credits scene felt like an outright confirmation that Monica was back, only for her to vanish without a trace immediately afterwards.
