6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) (6.1)
The problem with this film is that it was always going to be compared to the 1974 original; a reputation there was no way it was ever going to live up to. However, despite falling short of the Tobe Hooper version, bad film this is not. One thing for sure is that it definitely does not warrant an exceedingly stingy 6.1 rating which it has been endowed by the IMDB users. People have criticized the movie for its over excessive use of gore and its weaker storyline in comparison to the original, but I always think it courageous for a relatively new filmmaker to remake a real classic film of the past, and I personally feel Marcus Nispel did a decent job in recapturing that suspense that made the 1974 version such a hit. The cast, lead by Jessica Biel, is a very convincing one, and this helps to form the chilling atmosphere which is not always present in the modern horror movie. As expected, the movie is dirty, brutal and gory; Not to mention the villain Leatherface is absolutely terrifying. (In fact, in my cinema two girls left the cinema in tears 2/3 of the way through because they couldn't stomach the gore.) Surely that is the reaction a horror movie is meant to provoke? So overall, Nispel could have done a lot worse with this remake, and by no means did he massacre the original. Obviously, he possessed the luxury of a much bigger budget and effects, but this didn't take away from the suspense or nightmarish atmosphere that was present under Hooper. Personally I believe that if this was a stand alone horror movie and not a remake, it would have been guaranteed at least a rating in the 7's by IMDB.
My Rating: 7.4
