7. Gone With The Wind (8.2)
Unfortunately I was forced upon this film by my Dad when it ill-fatedly appeared on Channel 4 over the Christmas period. After hearing all the flimflam that it's one of the best movies ever made, I was expecting/hoping to witness a classic movie. But regrettably, what I instead watched, was nothing of the sort. O.K I acknowledge, it was an alright movie. The acting was good, the sets, costumes and photography were all nicely done and to be fair, it had a decent story. However, I simply can't see past the fact that this is merely a chick flick of the '30s. And how it is considered today a timeless classic and one of the greatest cinematic achievements of all time I'll never know. As far as I'm concerned, it was dated, over melodramatic, extraordinarily dull and not to mention significantly too long. Fair enough, it did have a compelling storyline and did convey an important message about the devastation, hardship, and brutality of the Civil War, but for that, you can credit the novel not the film. In fact, the script definitely did its best to (and almost succeeded in) ruining this. You may think I'm being a little cruel seeing as it was released over 70 years ago, but in my opinion the true indication of a great film is that it is timeless. This film is by no means timeless. As I have already stated, it is no more than a mediocre and outdated chick flick of the 1930s, which has bizarrely been earmarked as one of the greatest movies ever made by the users of IMDB.
My Rating: 7.0
