Marilyn Monroe standing on a subway grate while on a date with the lucky Richard Sherman (Tom Ewell) is one of the most famous scenes in movie history. It’s also a testament to Marilyn’s talent that she was able to make something as simple as breeze not only sexy, but iconic.

The filming of the scene was not a breeze, however. It was initially filmed on a real street in New York which attracted a large crowd of onlookers. A majority of them were men who responded to the sight of Marilyn’s billowing dress by catcalling and shouting things like “higher!” Their juvenile noise ruined every take and the crew were forced to reshoot the scene on a Hollywood set which contained no sleazes, well...no loud ones.
