10 Movie Roles Actors Wish They'd Never Accepted
3. Sir Alec Guinness As Obi-Wan Kenobi
It was the role that defined him, and that's why he hated it so much. Sir Alec Guinness is best known to almost everyone for appearing as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars films, a role for which he received an Oscar nomination, but Guinness, who had enjoyed a long and successful career well before George Lucas put him in space, grew to hate the character.
Even when the film first came out, the legendary English actor called it "fairy tale rubbish", stating it was "technically brilliant" but criticising the dialogue as "excruciating". Astonishingly, it was he who lobbied for Obi-Wan to be killed off. He told George Lucas that it would make for a stronger character, but later revealed he'd only said that because he was sick of reading the lines and just wanted out.
Either way, Guinness negotiated a good deal and earned a lot of money from the film. It seemed like a good career move, but when the actor saw Star Wars become such a huge cultural phenomenon, he started to get mad. Eventually, he allegedly got so sick of Star Wars he threw away any fan mail he received and even told one little boy to stop watching the film after being asked for an autograph.
