Anne Hathaway's role as Fantine in Les Miserables is renowned for its tragedy, telling the tale of the noble woman turned to prostitution to support her daughter. In the story, Fantine is forced to sell her hair and her front teeth, but luckily for Anne Hathaway, she had to part with only one in reality.

Opting to shave her head for real, Hathaway wasn't prepared for the mental trauma of losing her hair, even though she was the first to suggest it to director Tom Hooper. Coupled with losing 25 pounds on a diet of two dried oatmeal-paste squares, the actress submitted herself to a dark headspace to truly capture the pain of Fantine's life, and it was one she struggled to get out of for a long time afterwards.

She described the aftermath in an interview: "I was in such a state of deprivation - physical and emotional. When I got home, I couldn't react to the chaos of the world without being overwhelmed. It took me weeks till I felt like myself again." Notably, Hathaway won Best Supporting Actress for her trauma in the role of Fantine - but still wasn't feeling entirely together yet, and delivered a speech that rubbed many up the wrong way for its falseness. At least she tried, guys.
