6. Re-Animator: Evolution
The original Re-Animator was an adaptation of a classic H.P. Lovecraft story, about a brilliant - if ethically challenged - surgeon trying to cure death. The film didn’t have much to do with the story but it’s gory and hilarious, meaning it’s a total cult film. It had two sequels, but neither lived up to the unhinged beauty of the first.
The next instalment looks set to be a soft reboot, and an attempt to edge the series closer to the Lovecraft’s story. Herbert West is being recast, and at this moment none of the original cast or crew will be involved.
B-movie staples Lin Shaye (Insidious) and Brad Dourif (Child’s Play) will have key roles, and it’s intriguing to see what a more grounded take on the story will be. This one is flying quite low under the radar, but if it gets some positive early reviews it could re-animate (sorry) the long dead series.
