10 Movie Supervillains Ruined By Botched CGI

9. Venom (Spider-Man 3)

The Incredible Hulk Abomination
Sony Pictures

On any list ranking the greatest Marvel anti-heroes of all time, Venom deserves pride of place towards the top, alongside the likes of the Punisher, Deadpool and Wolverine. So it's fair to say that Spider-Man 3 didn't exactly do him justice.

The concluding chapter in Sam Raimi's trilogy handed the Lethal Protector his cinematic debut, but it held off until the final act before unleashing him in full symbiotic mode, and even then he was jostling for screen time with Sandman and Harry Osborn.

It wasn't worth the wait, not least because the effects used to transform Topher Grace's Eddie Brock into Venom were unconvincing. He looked overly computerised and artificial, rather than imposing and gooey, but that was only part of the problem.

Casting Grace was a poor shout from the start, considering he lacks the formidable stature of Venom from the comics, plus his take on the character was a snivelling weasel, a far cry from the tragic figure turned nightmarish villain from the source material.

Sure, the choice of actor was a big part of the problem here, but if Spider-Man 3 had at least made Venom look right, that would have been something.

Over to you, Tom Hardy...
