10 Movie Trailers That Cleverly Hid Huge Spoilers
7. Luke Skywalker's Glorified Cameo - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
The Spoiler
That Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) entire role in the long-anticipated sequel amounts to no more than a quick cameo in the final scene, lasting barely more than a minute.
How The Trailer Hid It
J.J. Abrams strikes again with his pesky mystery box, and because fans were so desperate not to have the nature of Luke's return spoiled, they understandably gave Abrams the benefit of the doubt, that the Jedi's near-total absence from the trailers was simply an attempt to maintain the surprise.
The visually stunning trailer shot of a hooded Luke placing his hand on R2-D2 was all the assurance fans needed that the iconic heroic would return with a vengeance, but of course, this was actually just a quick flash from a vision witnessed by Rey (Daisy Ridley), and Luke has no direct involvement in the plot.
It's a clever feat of using the audience's own spoiler-phobia against them, alongside smart exploitation of a filmmaker's reputation for smoke and mirrors.
