1. The Bride In Black

Hawkeye Evil
Stage 6 Films

The Insidious franchise is a bit turbulent across its four films, but it's got fairly solid lore and world building. Some people are born with the ability to astral project, but doing so puts them at risk of possession by evil entities.

The first installment sets this up well; the gifted young boy Dalton Lambert gets stuck in the "Further." The various demonic spirits who dwell there are drawn to living souls because the desperately wish to return to the world of the living.

It's down to father Josh to save his son at any cost. While he is able to get Dalton back to his body in time, he fails to return to his own before the Bride in Black takes his place.

The entity known as the Bride in Black turns out to be... well, a guy named Parker Crane. He was driven to murderous rage by his abusive childhood, and became jealous of Josh's well-adjusted upbringing during a chance encounter on his deathbed. This obsession lasted into the afterlife, and was only satiated once Parker finally got a hold of Josh's body.

As host of Parker Crane's spirit, Josh immediately becomes a threat; his first action is to murder psychic family friend Elise Ranier. His homicidal tendencies only grow, until the entire Lambert family is in danger.

Thankfully, the spirit of Elise is able to stick around for a bit, and help the real Josh find a way to get his body back. It turns out that, if you're possessed by a serial killer, your best chance is to go for the abusive parent's spirit who happens to still be manipulating things even from beyond the grave.
