10 Movie Villains Who Turned Heroes Evil
3. Jafar
Villains corrupting heroes usually has a whiff of the oblivious about it. Whether our hero is blissfully unaware that they've been swindled into doing a bad thing or if there's hypnotism or blackmail involved, a lot of the time they still are clinging on to the idea that they're doing something for the "greater good."
Here's where Disney gets surreptitiously dark - Aladdin's baddie Jafar has been manipulating the well-meaning but gullible Sultan for a while, even willing to get in Princess Jasmine's pants, all in the name of claiming the crown of Agrabah for himself. Jafar really gets mean when he finally has his hands on Genie's lamp, though.
We're introduced to the Genie as the all-powerful but lovable lamp-encased entity. But, despite his cosmos-manipulating abilities, Genie is nothing more than a servant to whoever rubs his lamp. Aladdin's time as his master was well spent doing musical numbers and making slightly inappropriate jokes, but nothing could prepare them for Jafar's theft of the lamp.
With Jafar as his master, Genie cannot help but to do as he commands, even if that means watching in horror as the wishes enable the torture of his friends. What's worse is Genie's cognisance of his actions. Prior to this he'd been a moral centre, guiding Aladdin in his romantic quest and really pushing for everyone to do the right thing. Seeing Genie reduced to the bad guy's lacky is the most difficult part of the film - and that's including Jasmine's flirtations with the evil sorcerer.
