2. Richie Cusack - A History Of Violence

Sam Rockwell Green Mile
New Line Cinema

David Cronenberg's 2005 drama A History of Violence is an absolute masterclass of tension, mystery and character. It concerns Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen), a diner owner with a comfortable family life who becomes a local hero after he thwarts a robbery. But his newfound fame throws his life into turmoil when a gangster (Ed Harris) comes to town claiming Stall is actually a hitman called Joey Cusack.

As he confronts his past, Stall/Joey meets up with his brother, Richie Cusack, who wants him to return to his old, violent life.

Played by William Hurt, Richie is charismatic, cruel, charming and feared, but only appears in the film for less than ten minutes. The fact that Hurt was nominated for an Oscar for such a short appearance speaks volumes about how much potential Richie had as a character, and that maybe instead of focusing on Harris' gangster, more time could have been spent exploring the much more interesting mob boss.
