3. Captain Phasma - The Star Wars Sequel Trilogy

Much like the Prequel Trilogy, the Star Wars Sequels suffer from a slight villain issue. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) was compelling but maddeningly inconsistent; General Hux (Domhall Gleeson) showed promise but was cast aside; and Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) was frightening and intriguing...until he was killed and replaced with Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). Because reasons.

But the most misjudged use of a villain comes with Captain Phasma. Played by Game of Thrones' own Gwendoline Christie, Phasma burst into the Sequel Trilogy as a formidable warrior and leader, completely committed to the First Order.

But as quickly as she is made a fun new villain, with badass armour and a feud with fan favourite Finn to boot, she is tossed aside during The Last Jedi, killed in anti-climatic fashion with no background, no characterisation, and no major character arc, never to be mentioned again.

This is one of The Last Jedi's biggest misfires, and a key example of character assassination for no real reason. Phasma was full of possibility and Christie was more than capable of bringing the captain to life, but the film just wasn't ready to give her the chance. And as Delilah S. Dawson's novel "Star Wars: Phasma" shows, this wasn't a great move.
