David Lowery's supernatural drama makes the absolute most of its low-budget conception - having been made for just $100,000 - wringing as much haunting pathos out of its deceptively simple premise as humanly possible.

A Ghost Story was conceived by Lowery after he suffered his own existential crisis, and follows a recently deceased man (Casey Affleck) who now wanders the Earth as a white-sheeted ghost.

Despite its fantastical nature, the film nevertheless explores the agony of bereavement in a uniquely relatable and multi-faceted way, by observing from a dead man's perspective how his wife (Rooney Mara) moves on from him while the universe also ticks onwards.

Despite the potential silliness of a movie which literally puts an Oscar-winning actor under a white bedsheet, A Ghost Story proves tremendously affecting while also ensuring to keep viewers up at night pondering the anxiety-inducing finality of death.
