10 Movies Everyone Thinks Are Based On A True Story (But Aren't)

1. Remember Me

2010's romantic drama Remember Me revolves around star-crossed young lovers Tyler (Robert Pattinson) and Ally (Emilie de Ravin), and culminates with one of the most infamously unexpected twist endings in cinema history.

At film's end, Tyler is suddenly killed in the 9/11 attacks while visiting his father in the North Tower of the World Trade Center, which many critics dismissed as a cheap, tacky attempt to wring additional pathos from a mediocre story.

Yet the invocation of a real world tragedy was so jarring that some audience members simply assumed that Remember Me must've been based on a true romance.

But alas, aside from the fact that the 9/11 attacks objectively happened on September 11, 2001, there's nothing true about this movie at all. Tyler and Ally aren't based on anyone who existed, and it's really just a middling romance that gets ill-advisedly plonked in the middle of an actual catastrophe.
