There is a long history in literature of books that have been deemed "unfilmable".

Dune was one of them for the longest time, until Denis Villeneuve proved everyone wrong to the tune of many hundreds of millions of dollars. The same could not be said for another adaptation of a beloved sci-fi novel - 2012's Cloud Atlas.

David Mitchell's book went down a treat when it came out in 2004, scooping awards like they were going out of fashion.

There was trepidation about turning it into a movie - it's set over six different interweaving narratives, which speculators worried wouldn't come across well on film - but directors the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer took on the challenge anyway.

In the end, Cloud Atlas the film didn't appeal to fans of the book nor to fans of movies in general. It was called sprawling by some, whilst others criticised its length. None of this boded well for its box offices numbers, which were disappointing to say the least.

Cloud Atlas made just over $130 million worldwide on a budget of around $100 million.

Clearly people were happy to just stay at home and read the book.
