10 Movies From 2017 That Really Shouldn’t Have Been Boring
5. The Snowman
The Snowman had so much going for it ahead of release, being adapted from Jo Nesbø's hit novel, starring the brilliant likes of Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson and J.K. Simmons, and best of all, being directed by the fantastic Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).
Rather than the grimy Girl with the Dragon Tattoo-esque thriller audiences were hoping for, The Snowman is in fact a low-effort, low-energy slog, with Fassbender impressively looking more bored and defeated than the audience feels watching the movie.
Alfredon's direction is weirdly slack, the pacing is awful, the plotting generic, and the film only musters interest when it's being unintentionally hilarious. The only truly memorable aspect of the film is Val Kilmer's bizarre performance: he was clearly unwell during production, and so much of his performance was blatantly, horrendously re-dubbed in post.
Outside of that, this is one of the dullest and most disappointing major Hollywood movies to release over the last few years.
