There are horror movies, and then there's Lynne Ramsay's We Need to Talk About Kevin.

An uncompromising adaptation of Lionel Shriver's novel, the film tackles a taboo subject rarely discussed cinematically or in real life - a mother failing to connect with her child.

Tilda Swinton is breathtaking as the haunted Eva, a woman who reflects on a recent atrocity committed by her teenage son, Kevin (Ezra Miller), and tries to reconcile the role her parenting may or may not have played in his act.

Ramsay's film pulls no punches whatsoever in pondering the forces which drive a person - a child, even - to psychopathic, murderous behaviour, and how the parents of such individuals struggle to process this.

Rather than resort to lazy armchair psychology or provide a clear-cut answer to its central tragedy and the resulting fallout, We Need to Talk About Kevin is more of a provocative conversation starter.

With school shootings still firmly on the rise in the U.S., the subject matter remains no less relevant than when the movie was released back in 2011.
