10 Movies Nobody Wanted To Admit Were Actually Remakes
1. The Fast And The Furious Is Basically Point Break
One may have gone on to spawn a lucrative blockbuster franchise that's still going strong almost 20 years later, while the other has to make do with an enduring status as an all-time cult classic and an awful remake, but there's no denying that the multi-billion dollar string of sequels and spinoffs for the Fast and Furious franchise all began with a remake of Point Break that swapped surfing for street racing.
Swap Johnny Utah and Bodhi for Brian O' Conner and Dominic Toretto, and you still get exactly the same movie, as an unproven rookie cop infiltrates a close-knit group with more than a passing interest in adrenaline-fueled adventures in order to crack a big case, before finding out that they're actually the criminals he's been hunting all along. Eventually, the lawman falls for a woman with close ties to the gang's charismatic leader, who is also allowed to escape from the authorities during the final act due to the mutual respect and admiration they've formed for each other.
Nobody involved with the Fast and Furious franchise ever mentions Point Break at all, which seems very strange for what is clearly a remake of the thinnest veil. Both movies even have references to Corona beer and tuna sandwiches, which seems far too specific to be a coincidence, while at one point Brian and Dom have a chinwag at a highway diner that was also featured in... yep, you guessed it.
