5. The Godfather Part III
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCAcWDDPdNY What We Expected: Given that Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo had managed to strike gold twice with both The Godfather and its sequel winning the Academy Award for Best Picture among other honours, it was expected that Part 3, directed 16 years after the release of the last film, wouldn't be a whole lot different. It would give audiences the closure they had been craving, as an aged Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) saw his empire wind down. What We Got: An enjoyable but flawed finale to the Godfather saga, suffering from the impossibly high expectations fostered by the enormous success of the first two films, as well as their consistent designation as two of the greatest films ever made. It did, however, also manage to be nominated for Best Picture, perhaps the best indication that the fanboys are a little out of step with their scathing ire for it. Part III feels less sure-footed than the first two, indulging outlandish set-pieces, and forcing viewers to suffer a nepotism-inspired performance from Sofia Coppola as Michael's son Mary Corleone, when it's clear that, to be totally blunt, she can't act worth a damn. However, the end result still pushes the right emotional buttons right through to its end, and though it isn't the film its predecessors were, it's still significantly better than disappointed Godfather fans will tell you.
