10 Movies So Sad You Can Only Watch Them Once

6. Mary And Max (2009)

The Father Anthony Hopkins
Icon Entertainment International

The semi-autobiographical story of an obese man with autism (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who becomes pen pals with a lonely Australian girl (Toni Collette), Adam Eliot's stop-motion drama is both deeply rewarding and crushing.

Following these two unlikely friends over several years as they battle depression, failing careers, and doomed relationships, Mary and Max is all the more effective because of its animation, which brings the characters to life in a painfully human way you won't be expecting.

Anchored too by its spotless voice cast - particularly a devastating Hoffman - the drama tackles numerous themes designed to leave you reeling, and though it ends on a quietly optimistic note, the build-up to the final act makes Mary & Max a film best left seen once and never again.
