He-Man and Skeletor came to life in the 1987 Gary Goddard film, Masters of the Universe, and a reboot has been talked about for many years now. The original film, starring Dolph Lundgren, wasn't a commercial or critical success but developed a cult following over the years, leading several directors and screenwriters to take an interest in giving the film a modern makeover.

Back in 2007, Face/Off director John Woo was linked with the film but issues with the rights to the characters prevented the project from ever really taking off. Sony then got involved, with various directors being linked in the years that followed. Jeff Wadlow, director of Kick-Ass 2, was named at the helm at one point, but then he got replaced by McG.

Last year, a tentative 2019 release date was issued, but McG then left the project and David Goyer was called in to replace him. Goyer, who hadn't directed a film since 2009's The Unborn, was then relegated to screenwriting duty, with Aaron and Adam Nee announced to be sharing directorial efforts. The Masters of the Universe film has encountered a lot of issues in recent years but Sony seems to value the property and really wants to make this movie happen.
