10 Movies That Are Still Stuck In Development Hell
4. Halo
There was a time when Halo was the biggest thing in gaming. The first game was a huge hit, with the second and third enjoying massive global releases with crazy marketing budgets and countless fans queuing up to get their hands on the latest Xbox-exclusive FPS.
Naturally, talk of a film adaptation started to spread, and it actually seemed like it could turn out well. The Halo games have a rich mythos, with some interesting stories explored in novels and accompanying media.
Microsoft was keen on the idea of a film adaptation, sending couriers dressed up in Master Chief outfits to deliver a script written by English author Alex Garland to various studios. Eventually, 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios came to an agreement, calling in Peter Jackson as executive producer.
Neill Blomkamp, of District 9 fame, was set to direct and D.B. Weiss, who went on to make Game of Thrones, was involved in script rewrites but pre-production was a stop-start process, constantly being interrupted by various issues and eventually Blomkamp said the project was dead. The waning popularity of the Halo games makes the likelihood of a film adaptation pretty low, but if the franchise ever takes off again it might be possible for hardcore fans to finally get the movie they've been dreaming of.
