10 Movies That Broke Promises To Fans
4. It Will Fix Prometheus' Problems - Alien: Covenant
Save for the first two Alien movies, the franchise is a monument to broken promises and failed potential, as best evidenced by Ridley Scott's Prometheus proving unable to satisfactorily deliver a definitive lead-in to his original 1979 sci-fi classic.
But following the mixed fan response to Prometheus, Scott promised that sequel Alien: Covenant would serve as an apology of sorts for all of the perceived problems with its predecessor.
And so, fans were left exasperated when Scott ultimately ended up doubling down on many of Prometheus' issues: the ensemble cast of characters was even more outwardly stupid, and its links to the core Alien mythos, including a few xenomorph cameos in the third act, felt more like hasty fan service than actual quality storytelling.
That's not to forget perhaps the film's most agonising issue, though: literally nuking the most intriguing plot line from Prometheus - the Engineers - out of existence, and killing off its likeable protagonist Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace), off-screen no less, for no good reason.
As compelling as Covenant seemed on paper, it was ultimately an also-ran Alien entry that enthusiastically stewed in its own spectacular stupidity.
