10 Movies That Could Be Major Surprise Hits Of 2019

7. Ad Astra

Chaos Walking Set Tom Holland Daisy Ridley
Plan B

Astronaut Roy McBride travels to the outer edges of the solar system to find his missing father and unravel a mystery that threatens the survival of our planet.

That’s just about all we know, but director James Grey is carrying a lot of critical goodwill following his ambitious and serious minded adventure story The Lost City of Z.

While he has yet to find any great commercial success, stars Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones may bring enough star power to Ad Astra that this will become a bonafide Sci-fi hit in the vein of two handers like Gravity ($723) or the largely one-handed The Martian ($630) rather than go the way of Passengers, which disappointed with only $303m worldwide.

Ad Astra has a sensibly modest budget of $50m, so 20th Century Fox aren’t leaving themselves too exposed in a fickle marketplace, and the snaring of one of Hollywoods most in-demand cinematographers Hoyte Van Hoytema, who shot Interstellar and Dunkirk for Christopher Nolan, should mean that Ad Astra will look incredible regardless of the price tag.

Oliver Smith hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
