10 Movies That Could Be Major Surprise Hits Of 2019
2. Cats
While this one has huge name recognition and a good deal of prestige as the fourth longest running broadway show in history, Cats is, at the same time, something of a joke. Based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S Elliot. The musical recounts the story of a tribe of cats called "the Jellicles" the night they make "the Jellicle choice" deciding which cat will ascend to the Heavyside Layer and come back to a new life.
If that didn’t make any sense to you, you're not alone. Wildly considered to boast only one memorable song in the entire production, and featuring actors dancing around in leotards pretending to be cats, you can see why this might make for a problematic cinema adaptation.
Oscar winner Tom Hooper, director of the mixed critical and box office success that was Les Miserables, is looking to combat this ill will with the weaponised and potentially genius casting of Taylor Swift and Jennifer Hudson. If anyone is going to quiet the haters, you can bet it’ll be Swifty, who’ll be hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow musician Lady Gaga and make it all the way to the Academy awards next year if she plays her hand right.
Co-starring Ian McKellen, Judi Dench, Idris Elba, James Cordon and Rebel Wilson. Exactly how this thing is being realised is so far under wraps - we don’t know if leotards or motion capture will be the order of the day, and this thing could either be hilariously bad or a visionary reinterpretation.
