8. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

What Is It? A sequel to the inaugural Jack Reacher film from a couple of years back that everyone thought was kinda OK, Never Go Back brings back Tom Cruise as the diminutive brickhouse, but otherwise shakes up the cast and key creative team, with Edward Zwick directing. If the sub-titular novel is kept to, plot this time around is a lot more personal, with Reacher finding himself accused of murder. Will It Be Good? The new director and writers put that completely up in the air, but assuming they can competently put a movie together, what this film promises is story; Jack Reacher as a film had competency if not confidence, but now things are established you have to hope Zwick will follow through on the promise of Lee Child's books and deliver a solid standalone entry. But Will It Be A Hit? The biggest thing working against Jack Reacher 1 was its title - it showed a lack of faith in the standalone story and presented the whole thing as an attempt to force a franchise into life. That didn't stop it making some money, but now we've got the hero set up and his name recognisable to non-Lee Child fans, things can hopefully pick up.
