10 Movies That Could Be The Big Surprise Hit Of 2016
7. Elvis & Nixon
What Is It? The backstory of the iconic picture of Nixon and Elvis (bizarrely the most requested image from America's National Archives), it'll see Michael Shannon's King meeting Kevin Spacey's Tricky Dicky, detailing Elvis' care-free off-stage persona (the whole thing's motivated by him wanting to be a secret agent). Think Life, but a little less mopey and serious. Will It Be Good? You can bet on Spacey and Shannon being good, but both have a hit-and-miss track record and director Liza Johnson is unproven on this scale, so the quality of the film itself is up in the air. What Elvis & Nixon has going for it is tone; light-hearted biopics come with less weighty expectations than serious life-spanning ones. And everyone knows Kevin Spacey can do a fictional President with a flippant view on morals driven by greed well (even if he looks less like Nixon than Anthony Hopkins). But Will It Be A Hit? The big thing here is that this is an Amazon Studios release, meaning it'll be available on Prime shortly after cinemas, playing to a massive potential audience. This release method already greatly helped Beasts Of No Nation and The Ridiculous Six over at Netflix, and Elvis & Nixon looks to have a broader appeal than both of those. At the very least a lot of people will see it.
