10 Movies That Could Be The Major Surprise Hits Of 2018

5. The Girl In The Spider's Web

The Movie: Based on David Lagercrantz's famous novel (which continued on the series originally created by Stieg Larsson), The Girl In The Spider's Web is directed by Fede Alvarez (Don't Breathe, Evil Dead) and stars The Crown's Claire Foy as Lisbeth Salander, a shady, anti-social computer hacker.

This movie is unrelated to David Fincher's 2011 adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - this is a new continuity with a new cast and crew.

Why It Could Be A Hit: While Fincher's Dragon Tattoo was successful, it wasn't a monster hit - there was something missing. It was a great, great movie, but it wasn't easy to watch and it lacked that crowd-pleasing element that held back its potential at the global box-office.

Which is why bringing Fede Alvarez onboard could be what turns The Girl In The Spider's Web into one of 2018's most buzzed-about movies, sending it skyrocketing above Fincher's effort.

The director is capable of helming a dark, uncomfortable story - it's impossible to sit through Don't Breathe without looking away once or twice - but he can also make them fun and enjoyable at the same time. Evil Dead was incredibly entertaining, but it was also bloody, disturbing and genuinely scary, and this combination could work wonders when applied to The Girl In The Spider's Web.

Plus, Claire Foy's star is on the rise thanks to The Crown, and capitalising on her current popularity can only help.
