5. The Birth Of A Nation
As previously mentioned, with the Oscar race controversy being such a big deal, its almost a given that a prominent African-American film will be included in the Best Picture field next year. While theres a few contenders that could benefit from this, it appears fairly likely that The Birth Of A Nation will be the one audiences take to and vehemently support, and for much more than the simple case of diversity. Following the 1831 slave revolt of Nat Turner, the film was written, directed by and stars up-and-comer Nate Parker. Despite the obvious similarities to 12 Years A Slave, thanks to its warfare, the film is much more like Braveheart, which is, incidentally, another Best Picture winner. The film got overwhelming reviews at Sundance, sweeping up some major prizes in the process. And it's going to have legs; the film was sold for a whopping $17.5 million to Fox Searchlight and they are most certainly going to push it come the fall.
